On the eve of a new phone discussion between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, which Europe will undoubtedly watch closely, High Representative Kaja Kallas issued a warning: Russia does not want peace in Ukraine and cannot be trusted to further such a goal.

Russia “will seize this opportunity to present all kinds of demands, and we already see that they’re presenting demands that are ultimate goals,” Kallas stated following a Brussels meeting of foreign affairs ministers on Monday afternoon. She made these remarks in response to Putin’s evasive response to the White House’s offer of a 30-day truce in Ukraine, which Kyiv has already agreed to.

Putin also discussed a way to deal with what he described as the “root causes” of the conflict, a phrase he frequently uses to urge for Ukraine to be demilitarized and to commit to neutrality, both of which Kyiv vehemently opposes. Russia has the upper hand,” Kallas declared on Monday. At the moment, it appears that Russia is not genuinely interested in peace. Around the table, there was a consensus that Russia is not to be trusted. Kallas responded, “As we see, there is no negotiating table because Russia is not coming to the negotiating table,” when asked if Europe would be invited to the US-led discussions.
