More than half a million migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela will have their temporary legal status revoked, according to US President Donald Trump’s administration. Federal authorities filed a notice warning those migrants to leave the country before their permits and deportation shields are revoked on April 24.

The 530,000 migrants were admitted to the US under the CHNV sponsorship program, which was established during the Biden administration with the goal of creating legal migration routes. Following his election to power, Trump halted the initiative.

Launched in 2022 under Democratic President Joe Biden, the initiative initially served Venezuelans before being extended to other nations. If they had American sponsors, it permitted the migrants and their immediate family members to enter the United States and stay for two years under a temporary immigration status called parole.

According to the Biden administration, CHNV would improve entry screening and assist reduce unauthorized crossings at the southern US border.

On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security chastised the previous administration, claiming that the program had fallen short of its objectives. According to the agency’s statement, Biden officials “forced career civil servants to promote the programs even when fraud was identified; gave them [migrants] opportunities to compete for American jobs and undercut American workers; and then blamed Republicans in Congress for the chaos that ensued and the crime that followed.
