On Saturday, Elon Musk, US President Donald Trump’s billionaire advisor said that he expects the US and Europe to eventually form “a very close, stronger partnership” and achieve a “zero-tariff zone situation.”
Musk spoke via video link at the Italian far-right League party conference, which is part of the government coalition led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. I hope it is agreed that both Europe and the United States should move, ideally, to a zero-tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America,” Musk said in a video conference with Matteo Salvini, the LEGA party leader.
That is what I hope will happen. Furthermore, people will have more freedom to move between Europe and North America if they want to work in Europe or America. They should be able to do so, in my opinion. So, that is certainly my suggestion to the president.”
Musk, who owns Tesla, SpaceX, and the site for social networking X, has been instrumental in US government reduction as director of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency. Musk’s words contrasted sharply with Trump’s sweeping tariffs, which include a minimum 10% levy on US imports and a 20% tariff on EU imports.
