Authorities say a helicopter carrying a family of tourists crashed into the Hudson River in New York, killing six people, including three children. Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, told reporters Thursday that the pilot was the sixth member of a family of five from Spain. When the crash occurred, everyone was inside the helicopter. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families,” Adams stated.
According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the victims’ identities won’t be made public until the families have been informed. The cause of the collision is being looked into. The incident’s video captures the helicopter plummeting from the sky, inverted, then splattering into the Hudson River.
Shortly after turning at the George Washington Bridge to proceed along the New Jersey beach, officials reported that the chopper lost control. At 14:59 local time (19:59 BST), the New York Helicopters-operated helicopter departed from the Downtown Skyport on Manhattan’s lower side.
According to New York Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker, rescue boats were sent out right away after the crash was reported at approximately 15:17 EDT (20:17 GMT). Shortly after the call, swimmers were in the water,” he added.
Rescuers arrived on the scene, started “immediate life-saving measures”, and combed the water for survivors or victims, but their efforts were in vain.
