The Russian president declared a 30-hour “Easter truce” on Saturday, which Ukraine and Russia have accused one another of violating. More than 46 Russian attacks have been launched on Ukraine’s front line since Sunday morning, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The BBC has not independently confirmed these numbers.
According to state media, Russia’s defence ministry responded by accusing Kyiv of firing hundreds of drones and shells and claiming to have “repelled” Ukrainian attempts at attack. Putin said on Saturday that all fighting will cease between 16:00 BST on Saturday and 22:00 BST (midnight in Moscow) on Sunday. It would adhere, Kyiv added. We anticipate the Ukrainian side will do the same. Our forces must also be prepared to fend off any aggressive acts from the adversary and any breaches of the ceasefire.”
Zelensky, meanwhile, said that Putin’s announcement of a truce was really a “PR” ploy and that Ukraine had hundreds of drone launches and strikes on Sunday. In addition, Zelensky called Vladimir Putin’s remarks “empty” and charged that the Kremlin was attempting to give “a general impression of a ceasefire.
Russia is the only cause of this conflict and the reason it continues to go on, as this Easter has amply shown,” the president stated on Sunday. The Russian military ministry maintained that the ceasefire had been “strictly observed” by their soldiers. Shortly after US President Donald Trump promised to “take a pass” on mediating more Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations, the unexpected Easter truce” statement was made.
