Mike Waltz has been ousted from his position as national security advisor by US President Donald Trump, who will appoint him as ambassador to the UN. In a social media message, Trump praised Waltz for his efforts and announced that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will take over as America’s top diplomat in the meantime.
Waltz was criticised for inadvertently inviting a journalist to a discussion group where delicate military preparations were discussed. This was anticipated to be a political embarrassment during the UN confirmation hearings. The former congressman from Florida is the first high-ranking official to depart the White House during Trump’s second term.
Mike Waltz has worked tirelessly to prioritise our nation’s interests since his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress, and as my National Security Advisor,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. Waltz shared a brief comment and a screenshot of the president’s proclamation on X.
“I’m deeply honoured to continue my service to President Trump and our great nation,” wrote the president. Just hours before Thursday’s announcement, Trump decided to choose Waltz as UN ambassador, according to CBS News, the BBC’s US partner.
