According to the EU’s trade leader, the 27-member EU is dedicated to negotiating a trade agreement with the US based on “respect” rather than “threats. ” This follows US President Donald Trump’s warning to impose a 50% tax on all EU products going to the US.
EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic stated, “The EU’s fully engaged, committed to securing a deal that works for both,” during a conversation with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. EU-US commerce is unparalleled and has to be governed by respect for one another rather than threats. We are prepared to protect our interests.
Trump said on Friday that he was frustrated with the current EU-US trade talks and had already decided to implement tariffs on June 1. Our discussions with them (the EU) are going nowhere,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform, adding that no tariffs will be imposed on goods made or constructed in the US.
He subsequently told reporters, “I’m not looking for a deal, we’ve set the deal,” but he quickly added that a significant European firm’s investment in the US may make him open to a delay. According to US official data, the EU is one of Washington’s biggest commercial partners, exporting nearly $600 billion (€528 billion; £443 billion) in products and purchasing $370 billion last year.
