When gunmen opened fire on a religious event in the central Mexican city of Irapuato overnight, at least 12 people were murdered in the Guanajuato state, according to state officials on Wednesday.
According to the Guanajuato office of the attorney general, 20 additional people were hospitalised due to bullet wounds. One of the deceased was a child, aged 17, according to the office’s confirmation.
The event happened during the nighttime celebration of St. John the Baptist, a Catholic holiday in Mexico, when people were dancing and drinking on the street, according to the AP. According to footage that have gone viral online, individuals fled to seek cover and avoid the bullets as soon as the shooting began.
Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, denounced the mass shooting in Irapuato and said that an inquiry was underway. The events that transpired are regrettable. “An inquiry is in progress,” Sheinbaum stated.
A rumoured video that went viral on social media purportedly captured individuals dancing on a housing complex patio as background music played before to the deadly shooting. Still unknown, though, is the video’s veracity.
