On Friday, US President Donald Trump declared that he will immediately halt trade negotiations with Canada due to its intentions to keep imposing a tax on technology companies, calling it “a direct and blatant attack on our country. Trump claimed that the Canadians had recently notified the US that it was adhering to its intention to apply the levy, which is scheduled to go into force on Monday, in a post on his social media network Truth Social.
“Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,” Trump said on Twitter. We will let Canada understand the Tariff that they will be charging to do business with the United States of America during the next seven day period.
With a 3% tax on sales from Canadian customers, it will be applicable to businesses like Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber, and Airbnb.
Due at the end of the month, US corporations will be faced with a $2 billion (€1.7 billion) charge that will be applied retroactively. Both Canadian and international companies that interact with Canadian internet users are subject to the digital services tax.
