Next week, the European Parliament will discuss and decide on a “motion of censure,” which is a vote of no-confidence against Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, and her College of Commissioners.

Gheorghe Piperea, a Romanian MEP from the ultra-conservative party AUR, says he has gathered 73 signatures for his motion, which is more than the minimum number of MEPs (72) needed to start the process.

32 members of Piperea’s political party, the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), have supported the proposal, according to his office. The far-right organisations Patriots for Europe (6), Europe of Sovereign Nations (26), and non-attached MEPs provided the remaining signatures. At least 24 hours after the announcement, a plenary debate on the resignation request must be planned, and at least 48 hours after the discussion begins, a vote on the issue must be held.

According to parliamentary sources who spoke to Euronews, if President Metsola introduces the motion by the end of this week, the debate is expected to take place on Tuesday, July 8, and the vote is scheduled for Thursday, July 10. Any signing MEP, however, has the right to revoke their support for the proposal at any moment. The procedure is stopped if the one-tenth criterion is no longer reached.
