Trump Threatens to Impose Substantial” Tariffs on India for Purchasing Russian oil

Due to India’s purchase of oil from Russia, Donald Trump has vowed to “substantially” increase tariffs. They [India] don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine,” the US president said on Monday on his website, Truth Social.

One of the biggest consumers of Russian oil at the moment is India. After a number of European nations suspended trade with Russia during its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it has grown to be a significant export market for Moscow. The additional duty, which Trump did not define, follows days after he announced a steep 25% levy on India.

In a statement, Randhir Jaiswal, a spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry, said that the US had urged India to acquire Russian gas “for strengthening global energy markets stability” at the beginning of the dispute. He stated that India “began importing from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the outbreak of the conflict”.

India also attacked the United States, its biggest trading partner, for enacting the tariffs at a time when the United States continues to trade with Russia. Despite severe sanctions and tariffs, the United States and Russia exchanged commodities valued at an estimated $3.5 billion (£2.6 billion) last year.
