Following Decades of Hostilities, Azerbaijan and Armenia Strike a Historic Accord

Following nearly 40 years of a brutal Karabakh conflict, leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev, signed a peace deal in Washington on Friday in front of US President Donald Trump.

We are bringing about peace in the South Caucasus today,” stated President Aliyev of Azerbaijan. “Today we writing a great new history.” Premier Pashinyan of Armenia went on to say that this deal marked the beginning of a new era of peace. “(We are) laying foundations to a better story that the one we had in the past,” he stated. At a joint news conference with the two presidents, Trump declared, “The nations of Armenia and Azerbaijan are committing to ending all fighting forever.

Following a swift military campaign, Azerbaijan regained complete control of the Karabakh territory in September 2023, and Baku and Yerevan have been working on normalizing their ties for the last year.

Although Trump was present at the signing ceremony on Friday along with Pashinyan and Aliyev, the former rivals were only able to patch things up after Washington and Moscow were removed from the equation. However, the US will gain from the peace deal, unlike Russia.
