Next Week, Trump and Putin will Meet in Alaska to Discuss Ukraine

Next Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump will meet in Alaska to talk about the future of the conflict in Ukraine. Trump used social media to promote the August 15 meeting, and a Kremlin spokeswoman subsequently confirmed it, stating that the venue was “quite logical” considering Alaska’s close proximity to Russia.

Trump was invited to Russia for a possible second summit, the spokeswoman noted.  Ukraine has not responded immediately. The meeting was announced just hours after Trump said that Ukraine could have to give up land to put an end to the conflict, which started when Russia invaded its neighbor in February 2022.

A lot of Russians have lost their lives in the three and a half years that the area has been under conflict. “Many Ukrainians have lost their lives,” Trump stated Friday at the White House. It’s complicated. Some of them will be swapped, and some will be returned. To the benefit of both parties, there will be some territory exchange.

The president of the United States did not elaborate on the specifics of that plan. The White House is attempting to persuade European leaders to agree to a deal that would see Russia annex the whole Donbas region in eastern Ukraine and retain Crimea, according to CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, which cited people involved with the talks.
