Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old Utah native, was identified by authorities on Friday as the suspect in the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Robinson is currently being held. In what seems to be a major development in the investigation, US President Donald Trump initially announced on Friday that police had a suspect in custody.
When Trump appeared on Fox television, he said, “Someone very close to him said, ‘Hmm, that’s him.'” He also stated that he learned of the arrest five minutes before he appeared on the show. FBI Director Kash Patel and Utah Governor Spencer Cox announced the announcement during a press conference.
Although authorities have not yet disclosed a motive, they have described material that they believe may provide insight into the murder. This includes engravings on bullet casings found inside the powerful rifle that was allegedly used in the assault, such as one that read, “Hey, fascist! Catch! Cox stated.
According to the governor, a roommate also sent officials texts from the Discord messaging platform that included a contact named Tyler and talked about a weapon with engraved bullets, a sight, and a towel wrapped over it. Along the route investigators suspect Robinson took after firing a shot from a distant roof and then running away, a Mauser.30-calibre, bolt-action rifle was discovered in a wooded location.
