A Russian Conspiracy to Incite Violence Surrounding a Crucial Election has Led Moldova to Imprison 74 People

In an investigation into a purported Russian-backed plot to provoke mass riots and destabilize the country in the run-up to crucial parliamentary elections,” Moldovan authorities reported conducting 250 raids and detaining dozens of people on Monday.

According to authorities, the raids occurred at several locations throughout the nation and targeted over 100 individuals. According to Victor Furtuna, top prosecutor for Moldova’s Office for Combating Organised Crime and Special Cases, 74 individuals were held for as long as 72 hours.

According to Moldovan police, criminal elements from the Russian Federation orchestrated the unrest plot. In the lead-up to the election, online disinformation was used to undermine Moldova’s pro-European government.

Maia Sandu, the president of Moldova, and her Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) want to hold onto power and continue Moldova’s journey towards EU membership. Moldova is bordered to the west by Romania and to the east by Ukraine.

However, the nation’s ballots have long been the focus of fierce disinformation and destabilization efforts, such as bribery and vote-buying operations. This indicates that Moldova has found itself in the midst of an information war that pits its deeper ties with Russia against EU membership.
