According to PM Meloni, Italy is Prepared to Recognize Palestine Under Two Conditions

On Tuesday night, Premier Giorgia Meloni declared that the parties that make up her government will introduce a motion in the Italian Parliament demanding the recognition of Palestine, but with two requirements: the release of the hostages that Hamas took during its attacks on October 7, 2023, and the exclusion of Hamas from any future Palestinian government.

Meloni stated, “I am not opposed to Palestine’s recognition, but we must prioritize the right things.” Despite its limitations, the decision is similar to those made by Belgium and France and represents a dramatic shift from Meloni’s position, which was unpopular with the Italian public and led to a wave of protests in Italian towns.

Together, they demanded a ban on Italy’s transfer of military hardware and weapons to Israel as well as increased pressure on Israel to end the conflict. A recent survey found that 40.6% of Italians support the recognition of a Palestinian state with full sovereignty, while 21.9% favor the establishment of a temporary international administration. Italians are cautious about Israel’s actions following the Hamas strikes on October 7, 2023, according to a different survey conducted by the Italian project YouTrend.
