While the Broader Auto Market Stagnates, Sales of Electric Vehicles soar Throughout the EU

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) reports that, although hybrid-electric vehicles remain the most popular category, battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are rapidly gaining market share in the EU automotive sector.

The EU experienced a 0.1% decrease in new car registrations in the first eight months of 2025 compared to the same period in the previous year, but a 5.3% increase in August. EV sales increased by 24.8% year over year between January and August.

The market share of battery-electric cars as of August 2025 YTD was 15.8%, which is still less than what is required at this point in the transition. The market for hybrid-electric vehicles remains the most popular power source among consumers, according to a news release from ACEA. A year ago, the market share of battery-electric cars was 12.6%; today, it is 15.8%.

Germany saw a 39.2% increase in EV sales between January and August, out of the four biggest economies in the EU. This segment expanded by 28.9% in Italy, while EV sales nearly doubled in Spain. Despite a 29.3% increase in EV sales in August alone, France had a tiny 2% dip.

In the first eight months of 2025, Volkswagen topped the EU’s new car sales charts. The German automaker’s overall sales increased 4.1% year over year during this time, giving it a 27.5% market share. Sales of Skoda and Cupra increased by 10% and 39.1%, respectively, the most among its brands. In contrast, sales of Audi, Porsche, and Seat declined.
