US President Donald Trump has announced that former UK Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair is set to take part in an international body overseeing Gaza under a new American-led peace plan. Blair has been named the first member of a newly created “Board of Peace,” chaired by Trump, which would temporarily supervise Gaza’s governance if Hamas accepts the proposal. Trump said additional international leaders will be appointed to the board in due course.
The board is central to a 20-point US plan aimed at ending the nearly two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas. The proposal includes steps to demilitarise Gaza and support its redevelopment.
Calling the initiative “the best chance of ending two years of war, misery and suffering,” Blair voiced support for the plan. Hamas, however, has yet to commit. A senior Hamas official told the BBC the group is open to reviewing any proposal that could end the war but insisted that any deal must secure Palestinian interests, guarantee a full Israeli withdrawal, and bring lasting peace.
In August, Blair attended a White House meeting with Trump to discuss Gaza’s future. US envoy Steve Witkoff later described the discussions as “very comprehensive,” though details were not made public.
