The appointment of conservative economist EJ Antoni to lead the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has been rescinded by US President Donald Trump. Shortly after Trump dismissed BLS commissioner Erika McEntarfer in August, halfway through her term, in response to a poor jobs report that sparked worries about the US economy, the nomination was made.
Conservatives applauded Antoni’s appointment, while other independent economists argued he was unfit for the position. According to a White House official, the president will shortly propose a new applicant for the position.

The public’s confidence in important economic data has been damaged by the BLS’s long-standing shortcomings, which President Trump is determined to address.
The appointment must be confirmed by the US Senate, which Trump’s fellow Republicans control. The statistics bureau has long been a target of Trump’s criticism.
