After Meeting Modi, Starmer Praises the India Trade Accord as a Launchpad

Following his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai, Sir Keir Starmer hailed the UK-India trade agreement as a launchpad” for deeper relations. In July, the two presidents struck a historic trade agreement and met to explore ways to further trade and commercial ties.

Over 100 CEOs, entrepreneurs, university vice-chancellors, and cultural leaders made up the UK’s largest-ever trade delegation during Sir Keir’s two-day visit to India’s financial metropolis. The two prime leaders also talked about the war in Ukraine, since India keeps purchasing Russian fossil fuels to support Vladimir Putin’s military effort.

According to Sir Keir, the trade agreement is “the most ambitious trade deal India has ever done and huge  for the UK. This trade deal is a launchpad to boost British leadership in everything from tech, to life sciences, to renewable energy, and much more beyond that,” he stated during a news conference. Given the size of India, the largest democracy in the world, and its projected rise to the third-largest economy by 2028, the opportunity is obvious.
