As international officials convened in Egypt to discuss the future of Israelis Gaza and the next steps of the ceasefire agreement mediated by the United States, the final 20 surviving captives held in Gaza were freed Monday, reuniting with their families in joyous celebrations.
No live captives are being held in Gaza by Hamas and its allies for the first time in almost two years. On Monday, 1,718 Palestinian inmates who had been detained in Israel without being charged were freed and sent back to Gaza. Additionally, Israel freed 250 Palestinians who were serving lengthy sentences.
During his tour to the Middle East, US President Donald Trump told the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, on Monday that the “long and painful nightmare is finally over. After earlier expressing optimism that the truce agreement would stand and that the battle in Gaza was finished, Trump told Israeli lawmakers, “This is a historic dawn of a new Middle East.
However, there are still many problems with the 20-point proposal that Trump, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey mediated. The news of the captives’ release was met with cheers, flag waving, and cries of “thank you, Trump in Tel Aviv’s captives Square.
