The Growing Energy Conflict Between Russia and Ukraine Causes Economic Hardship and Gas Shortages

On Saturday, a fire broke out at a Russian oil refinery about 900 miles from Ukraine’s borders. According to sources in the nation’s security agencies, the fire was caused by Ukrainian long-range drones and was the third to occur at the site in the past month. It was only the most recent development in Russia and Ukraine’s escalating energy war.

After the attack, footage from the vicinity of the Ufa refinery in Bashkortostan, a region in the southern Ural Mountains of Russia, showed a column of dark smoke rising from the plant. The refinery is among the biggest in the nation.

However, the battle for energy is a two-way street. Ukrainian gas output has been severely harmed by recent Russian missile and drone attacks, which have also resulted in widespread power outages throughout the nation. To make up the difference, Ukrainian officials warn they will have to buy costly gas from Europe.

More than 240,000 residences in the southwestern Odesa area were left without power on Saturday as a result of the most recent Russian assault on Ukraine, officials said. According to Ukraine’s energy ministry, over 800,000 clients in Kyiv had a brief outage.
