A Former Security Guard at the US Embassy in Norway Was Found Guilty of Spying for Iran and Russia

According to Norwegian state television NRK, prosecutors said the 28-year-old man provided information regarding the embassy’s floor layouts, security procedures, and diplomats.
A court in Oslo found a former security guard at the US Embassy in Norway guilty of spying for Iran and Russia on Wednesday.

The Norwegian man, 28, who has not been identified, received a sentence of three years and seven months in prison. Although he denied any criminal wrongdoing, he had admitted the facts of the indictment.

According to Norwegian public television NRK, prosecutors claimed he gave them information about the embassy’s ambassadors, floor plans, and security procedures, among other things. The man’s defense lawyers said in a statement on Thursday that the decision calls into doubt what, in terms of Norwegian law, constitutes espionage. “He overstated his own role and lied to foreign agents about having security clearance,” Elden Law Firm attorney Inger Zadig said in the statement.

His access was about the same as that of an embassy janitor. His knowledge was useless and could not, either alone or in combination, endanger people or any state’s security interests. The defendant was exonerated of blatant corruption but convicted guilty of five espionage-related offences.
