North Korea Claims to Have Showcased a new Hypersonic System in its Most Recent Missile Launches

As leader Kim Jong-un continues to develop weapons that are intended to overwhelm South Korean defenses, North Korea announced on Thursday that its most recent missile tests included a new hypersonic technology intended to improve its nuclear war deterrent.

North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported the incident one day after South Korea’s military claimed to have seen the North fire several missiles from a location south of Pyongyang. The missiles flew roughly 350 kilometers northeast before hitting the ground.

Two hypersonic projectiles were launched, according to KCNA, and they successfully hit a land target in the northern part of the nation. It implied that the missiles were intended to carry nuclear warheads when it referred to the system as strategic.

The name of the missile system that KCNA tested was not disclosed. Kim revealed some of his military’s newest weapons, including what looked to be a short-range ballistic system equipped with hypersonic glide vehicles, at a military parade earlier this month.

Days before international leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, are scheduled to convene in South Korea for the yearly Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference, the tests were conducted.
