President Donald Trump angrily dismissed a question concerning Jamal Khashoggi’s 2018 murder on Tuesday. He claimed the Saudi dissident journalist was “extremely controversial” and insisted the topic was only brought up during his meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in order to humiliate his guest.
You’re bringing up a really contentious individual. That individual you mentioned was disliked by many. “Whether you liked him or not, things happen,” Trump remarked in the Oval Office while overseeing the de facto Saudi leader’s pageant-style visit.
The incident served as the clearest example to date that Prince bin Salman’s period of diplomatic exclusion after Khashoggi’s murder is finished. The crown prince was greeted with all the formalities of a state visit, the pinnacle of American diplomatic protocol, on his first visit to the White House in over seven years.
A military band trumpeted his arrival as a group of dark horses led his black Mercedes limousine onto the South Lawn. Fighter jets, including F-35s, which Trump claims he intends to sell to Riyadh, flew overhead. Trump is having a black-tie dinner in the East Room later.
