Floods in Sri Lanka Have Killed at Least 193 People, and Many More are still Missing

As Sri Lanka struggles with one of its biggest weather disasters in years, at least 193 people have perished from mudslides and floods.

According to the Disaster Management Center, more than 20,000 homes have been demolished, leaving 108,000 people in state-run temporary shelters, and more than 200 individuals are missing.

A state of emergency was declared following Cyclone Ditwah, officials said, and around one-third of the nation was without running water or electricity. As the Kelani River’s water levels continue to rise quickly, some towns have issued evacuation orders.

Kandy and Badulla, where many areas remain blocked, reported the highest number of fatalities. In our village, two people passed away. Saman Kumara from the Badulla village of Maspanna stated, “Others are taking refuge in a temple and a house that is still standing.

Landslides have blocked all roads, making it impossible for us to leave the village and for anyone to enter. We are running out of clean water and there is no food,” he said over the phone to the News Center website. Eleven residents of an aged care facility that flooded on Saturday afternoon in Kurunegala’s north-central area are among the victims, according to authorities.
