US special envoy Steve Witkoff will meet the president of Ukraine’s national security committee, Rustem Umerov, for discussions in Miami on Thursday, the White House has confirmed. The meeting follows Witkoff’s over five hours with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Tuesday. These conversations the Kremlin said yielded “no compromise” on halting the war in Ukraine.
The conversations were “reasonably good,” according to US President Trump, who also mentioned that his son-in-law Jared Kushner was present. However, he stated that it was premature to predict the outcome because “it does take two to tango. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybhia said Russia should “end the tragedy”, and accused Putin of “wasting the world’s time.
When questioned by a reporter if Witkoff and Kushner believed Putin actually wanted to stop the war, Trump replied: “[Putin] wants to finish the war. “That was their impression.” On Wednesday, Zelensky stated that a meeting between US and Ukrainian negotiators would take place “in the coming days”.
In a statement on X, Zelensky stated: “Right now, the world plainly believes that there is a genuine potential to stop the war. However, he emphasized that conversations must be “backed by pressure on Russia.
