The UN Aid Organization Reduces its 2026 Appeal to €28 Billion Following the Lowest Yearly Funding in Ten Years

After support this year fell to the lowest level in ten years, primarily from Western governments, the UN’s humanitarian aid coordination office is reducing its request for yearly financing in 2026. On Monday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) announced that it was requesting $33 billion (€28 billion) to assist around 135 million people in dealing with the consequences of conflict, natural disasters, earthquakes, epidemics, and food shortages.

According to the office, next year it hopes to reach 3 million people in the Palestinian territories with over $4.1 billion (€3.5 billion), Sudan, which has the worst displacement crisis in the world, with an additional $2.9 billion (€2.4 billion), and Syria with a regional plan worth $2.8 billion (€2.4 billion).

Outbreaks of disease increased. Millions lacked access to necessary food, medical treatment, and safety. Hundreds of relief organizations closed, and programs to safeguard women and girls were reduced.

In order to assist 190 million people globally this year, the UN assistance coordinator requested $47 billion (€40 billion). It and its humanitarian partners touched 25 million fewer individuals this year than in 2024 due to the reduced funding.
