The already tense relations between Dhaka and Delhi have worsened after a Hindu man was killed during recent violent riots in Bangladesh. Questions about whether their once-close, tried-and-true relationship is irreparably deteriorating are becoming more prevalent as the two neighbors accuse one another of ruining their relationship.
Hindu nationalist organizations in India have protested the incident. Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old member of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority, was beaten to death by a crowd last week in Mymensingh, in northern Bangladesh, after being charged with blasphemy. The incident occurred during violent demonstrations in the capital city of Dhaka following the death of a well-known student leader, Sharif Osman Hadi.
The primary suspect, according to Hadi’s supporters, is connected to the Awami League, the party of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and has fled to India, escalating anti-Indian feeling in Bangladesh, a country with a majority of Muslims. However, Bangladeshi police stated that there was no proof the individual had fled the nation.
