Venezuela Must Sever Connections with US Adversaries in Order to Resume oil Production, According to the Trump Administration

According to two senior White House officials who spoke to CNN, the Trump administration has specified several requirements that Venezuela must meet in order to start producing oil again. The Trump administration warned Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodriguez at talks chaired by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the nation must sever relations with China, Iran, Russia, and Cuba and consent to work solely with the US on oil production, according to the officials.

According to them, Rodriguez must also consent to favor US energy corporations and the Trump administration in future oil sales. The requests made to Rodriguez were initially covered by ABC News. It follows the administration’s seizure of Nicolás Maduro, the nation’s now-ousted president, over the weekend.

According to people familiar with the talks, Trump administration think Venezuela’s economy can only sustain itself for a few more weeks without selling its oil reserves. The administration claims to have negotiated an agreement with the interim Venezuelan government to sell tens of millions of barrels of its extracted oil, which coincides with the demands.
