A fight from the 1962 conflict between China and India has been brought to light by a recent Bollywood film. The film, 120 Bahadur (Hindi for courageous hearts), narrates the tale of Indian soldiers who bravely defended the Rezang La pass in the icy Himalayan mountains of Ladakh. Although the movie, which starred Farhan Akhtar as Major Shaitan Singh, did not do well at the box office, it did highlight a fight that is frequently cited as the single bright spot in an Indian defeat.
Dialogue writer Sumit Arora told the BBC, “We felt it was very important that this story must be told, we wanted to honor the people who lived the story.” “We have taken some cinematic liberties, but our film stays very true to history.
Meetings to settle the disagreements had failed, and India and China’s relationship had been deteriorating due to border tensions until the conflict broke out. Additionally, Beijing objected to India providing sanctuary to the Dalai Lama, who had left Tibet following the 1959 uprising.
China’s strike on India on October 20 marked the beginning of the month-long conflict. Beijing accused Delhi of “aggressively encroaching on Chinese territory and violating Chinese airspace” and described it as “a self-defense counter-attack.
