A US Figure Skater who Lost Both of Her Parents in a Plane Crash in Washington Will Compete in the Olympics

Maxim Naumov, a figure skater from the United States, has been added to the team that will compete in the Olympics in Milan next month. Naumov’s parents perished in a commercial jet disaster in Washington, DC, last year.

One of the final topics Naumov spoke with his parents prior to their murder was his desire to join the US Olympic Team. When asked what his parents would think if they were watching, Naumov replied, “We did it.”

In January 2025, a military helicopter and an American Airlines plane collided in midair in Washington, DC, killing 67 people, including his parents, Vadim Naumov and Evgenia Shishkova. They represented Russia and won the 1994 World Pairs Figure Skating Championship.

Later, they relocated to the United States and began coaching at the Boston Skating Club. At the US figure skating championships in St. Louis on Saturday, Naumov, 24, finished third behind Ilia Malinin and runner-up Andrew Torgashev.

He will now compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics as one of 16 figure skaters from the United States. Naumov held a picture of himself and his parents while he competed this week. Naumov stated on Sunday, “I thought of them immediately,” according to US Figure Skating. “I wish they could be here to experience it with me, but I do feel their presence, and they are with me.
