Iranian security forces have killed at least 3,428 protesters during a nationwide crackdown, according to a report released on Wednesday by the Norway-based group Iran Human Rights (IHR). The organisation said more than 10,000 people have also been arrested since the demonstrations began.
IHR said the sharp rise in the confirmed death toll follows new information obtained from sources within Iran’s health and education ministries. The group stated that at least 3,379 of the deaths occurred during the most intense phase of the protests between 8 and 12 January.
Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of IHR, warned that Iran’s judiciary is now threatening protesters with mass executions. “After the widespread killing of protesters in recent days, the judiciary is issuing serious threats of large-scale executions,” he said. “The international community must treat these warnings seriously, as similar actions were carried out in the 1980s to maintain power.”
His comments came after Iran’s judiciary chief indicated on Wednesday that rapid trials and executions could take place for those detained during the unrest. This is despite repeated warnings from US President Donald Trump, who has said the United States could consider military action if protesters continue to be killed. He has stressed that any response would need to be swift to have an impact.
