Iran’s Shah’s Exiled son Claims the Islamic Republic Will Fall

Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s former shah, said on Friday that he believes the Islamic Republic is nearing its collapse as nationwide protests continue, and he urged the international community to step in.

Speaking at a news conference in Washington, Pahlavi said the fall of the current system was inevitable. “The Islamic Republic will fall, not a question of if, but when,” he said, adding that he plans to return to Iran.

Pahlavi has lived in exile in the United States since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that overthrew his father, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. In recent months, demonstrators across Iran have chanted his name during protests that authorities have violently suppressed. Human rights groups say at least 2,572 people have been killed during the crackdown, though some estimates suggest the death toll could be as high as 15,000.

Pahlavi again appealed to US President Donald Trump to take action, saying Iranians are already risking their lives on the streets. “The Iranian people are taking decisive action on the ground,” he said. “Now it is time for the international community to fully support them.
