The US Justice Department has opened an investigation into Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey over claims that they sought to obstruct federal immigration operations, marking a sharp escalation in the Trump administration’s dispute with Democratic leaders.
According to CBS News, the inquiry centres on public comments made by both officials about Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The investigation comes as a federal judge moved to restrict the actions of thousands of federal law enforcement officers deployed in Minneapolis, barring the use of pepper spray and the arrest of peaceful protesters.
Tensions in the city have intensified following the fatal shooting of Renee Good, 37, by an ICE agent last week. Protests have grown in response to the incident, and new details about Good’s death emerged on Friday. Official reports reviewed by CBS say paramedics found her with at least three gunshot wounds and possibly a fourth to the head.
Governor Walz responded to news of the inquiry by accusing the federal government of abusing the justice system. In a post on X, he said that weaponising investigations against political opponents was an authoritarian tactic, adding that the only person not under investigation was the agent who shot Good.
