Google AI Head Believes we Need to do More Research Right Away to Deal With AI Dangers

The head of Google DeepMind told BBC News that “more research on the threats of artificial intelligence (AI) needs to be done urgently. Sir Demis Hassabis stated in an exclusive interview at the AI Impact Summit in Delhi that the sector required “smart regulation” for “the real risks” that the tech posed.

As the Summit comes to an end, several tech CEOs and politicians have advocated for tougher global rules for AI. A united statement is due soon. The US, on the other hand, has turned down this point of view. Michael Kratsios, a technology consultant to the White House, said, “AI adoption cannot lead to a brighter future if it is subject to bureaucracies and centralised control.”

Sir Demis said it was vital to put in place “strong guardrails” to protect against the worst risks that come with the rise of autonomous systems. He claimed that the two biggest concerns were “bad actors” using technology and the chance of losing control of systems as they get stronger.

He stated that his company had a significant role to play, but that it was “only one player in the ecosystem” when asked if he could slow down the advancement of the technology to give specialists more time to work on its problems. But he said that “the hard thing” for regulators was keeping up with the speed of AI research.
