A coalition of 14 Arab and Islamic countries, including the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Arab League, criticised US Ambassador Mike Huckabee’s remarks that Israel might govern Arab areas.
The foreign ministries of Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine released a joint statement with the GCC, Arab League, and OIC.
They voiced significant alarm about Huckabee’s remarks, claiming they endanger regional security and contravene international law and the UN Charter. The statement stressed that Israel has no jurisdiction over the occupied Palestinian territories or any Arab lands.
The countries called for a stop to annexation plans and settlement development and reaffirmed their support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state along the 1967 boundaries. During an interview, Huckabee said that it would be appropriate for Israel to assume control of Arab-claimed territory, including the West Bank.
The governments worried that the remarks could exacerbate tensions in an already dangerous region and impede attempts to achieve a two-state solution. Several states called on the US to clarify its official position and reaffirm its commitment to international law.
