The Embattled AI Company Anthropic is Invited by Mayor Sadiq Khan to Grow in London

While denouncing the Trump administration for pursuing retaliation against the company, London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan is extending an invitation to San Francisco-based artificial intelligence (AI) developer Anthropic to expand its presence in his city.

Following Dario Amodei’s refusal to grant US defense organizations unrestricted access to Anthropic’s AI capabilities, the Pentagon classified Anthropic as a supply chain risk, prompting Sir Sadiq to write to Amodei. This type of behavior, which is obviously an attempt to threaten and punish Anthropic for not removing ethical measures, is quite troubling,” Sir Sadiq remarked. “As President Trump said, we will never allow a radical left, woke company to dictate how our United States Military fights wars,” a White House official told the BBC when asked about the mayor’s letter and his offer.

Anthropic has been contacted by the BBC. The BBC was informed by a representative of the Mayor’s office that talks with “senior leaders” of the business have taken place this week. Amodei objected to the idea of using Anthropic’s Claude model for autonomous military targeting or widespread domestic surveillance during discussions with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

The Pentagon has stated that the military must use technology “for all lawful purposes” and contended that the feared uses were unplanned and illegal.Anthropic stated that it intended to file a legal challenge to the designation.
