President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Sunday that Kyiv is prepared for the next round of trilateral peace talks to stop Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but that Washington and Moscow must decide where and when to meet.
According to Zelenskyy, Washington requested a meeting in the United States next week, but Russia declined. We are awaiting a reaction from the Americans. “Either they change the country where we meet, or the Russians confirm (a meeting in) the United States,” Zelenskyy said at a media briefing on Saturday.
Peace discussions were underway in the United Arab Emirates earlier this year, but were halted when the Iran war broke out following joint US-Israeli assaults on Iran in late February. As Iran launched retaliatory strikes, the crisis swiftly extended throughout the Middle East, which Zelenskyy thought would divert global focus away from Russia’s fight with Ukraine.
The Ukrainian leader also warned that Iran might deplete the air defense stocks that Ukraine relies on to withstand Russian missile assaults. Eleven countries have asked Kyiv for assistance in combating Shahed-type drones amid the Iran war and Tehran’s continuous strikes on Gulf states, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated last week.
