Following an agreement with the World Health Organisation, the Spanish government has allowed passengers from the MV Hondius to disembark at Granadilla port this weekend. Local port workers in Santa Cruz are protesting the decision.
The Spanish government has reached an agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO) that passengers on the MV Hondius cruise ship, which has been hit by a hantavirus outbreak, would be able to disembark this weekend at Granadilla (Granadilla de Abona) in the south-east of Tenerife.
This development enraged some Tenerife dock workers, who assembled outside the Canary Islands’ parliament building in Santa Cruz to express their fears that the impending arrival would endanger their health. According to reports, they blasted whistles, sounded vuvuzelas, and displayed banners. The ship has come from Cape Verde, where three individuals were evacuated owing to illness. Spanish authorities are preparing to welcome over 140 guests and crew members aboard a hantavirus-infected cruise ship, where health experts have promised to conduct meticulous evacuations.
