At a campaign event in the capital, Bogotá, a Colombian presidential contender was shot three times, allegedly twice in the head, leaving him critically injured. Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, 39, was assaulted on Saturday while speaking to supporters at a park. According to the attorney general’s office, a 15-year-old suspect was taken into custody by police at the site.

“Miguel is currently fighting for his life,” Maria Claudia Tarazona, Uribe’s wife, said, urging the country to pray for his survival. Let’s pray to God to direct the medical professionals who are caring for him. Uribe’s Centro Democratico party denounced the incident as a danger to “democracy and freedom in Colombia.

Online footage seems to capture the moment he was shot in the head while speaking, causing everyone in the area to panic and run. According to news agency AFP, paramedics stated that he had been shot twice in the head and once in the knee. Supporters gathered to maintain a vigil after he was evacuated to a hospital.

Late on Saturday night, Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán stated that Uribe had undergone surgery and was in the initial crucial hours of his recuperation. Following the incident, police and security personnel chased the 15-year-old suspect, who was shot in the leg, according to local media.
