Large smoke plumes can be seen on a screen that shows a live video from Ukrainian drones hovering above the outskirts of Pokrovsk, an area in eastern Ukraine that is home to one of the country’s most active front lines.
Russian positions, where we had observed Russian forces moving about as they attempted to move towards a crucial road leading into Pokrovsk, were hit by Ukrainian fire a few seconds earlier. Following the hit, at least one Russian soldier is hurt and may even be dead.
Watching the live feed is eerie. As US President Donald Trump puts it, it highlights the “never-ending bloodbath” that has resulted from the conflict that Russia initiated, which has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives to far.
We are at a rural home that has been transformed into a command headquarters for the Ukrainian army’s 155th mechanised brigade. The distance from front-line artillery positions is a few kilometres.
Compared to what we witnessed six months ago, the destruction depicted on the screens—houses and structures entirely destroyed is far larger. It is proof of the intense conflict waged over the last few months to protect Pokrovsk, a vital transportation centre in the Donetsk area.
