A ‘Win-Win’ for Modi and a Delicate’ Balance for Canada During Carney’s Trip to India

As both countries look to reduce their reliance on US trade, Prime Minister Mark Carney is in India for a crucial visit aimed at mending relations with the world’s largest democracy. Carney is meeting with business executives in Mumbai, where he started his trip. After that, he will visit New Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi for discussions.

The visit represents a dramatic improvement in ties, which had deteriorated after Canada accused India of extrajudicially executing a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil, a claim India vehemently disputed. As Carney’s journey begins, here are the changes that have occurred and the benefits each nation seeks. This trip is solely for commercial purposes for Carney, who wants to diversify Canada’s trading relationships in order to lessen its reliance on the US.

Progress on a full free trade agreement with India, which has been debated intermittently for the past 15 years, will be a major priority. Following former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s shocking public claim against India in 2023 that it was responsible for the shooting death of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia, trade negotiations recently came to a standstill. The case against the four guys who were eventually accused with his murder is still pending.
