According to new dietary recommendations released by US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Americans should consume more protein while reducing highly processed foods and added sugar.
The Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services publish the guidelines every five years. They also recommend consuming three servings of full-fat dairy products daily and relax the prohibitions on alcoholic beverages.
Experts have given the new recommendations mixed assessments. The rules underpin federal nutrition programs, including school lunch programs. At a press conference on Wednesday at the White House, Kennedy stated, “My message is clear: eat real food.
In general, the suggestions include avoiding sweets and highly processed meals, such as prepackaged snacks like chips, cookies, and candies, and consuming protein, full-fat dairy, fiber-rich whole grains, fruit, and vegetables.
In contrast to previous recommendations that recommended low-fat or fat-free dairy to assist Americans in limiting their intake of saturated fat, the emphasis on full-fat dairy represents a shift. It advocates using oils like olive oil for cooking, but it also promotes beef tallow, a high-saturated-fat favourite of Kennedy’s.
