According to the US State Department, US and Russian officials agreed to “normalise” relations and start talking about the conflict in Ukraine during their high-stakes meeting in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

The meeting was referred to as “the first step of a long and difficult journey” by US State Secretary Marco Rubio. “Predetermine those” would be incorrect, he continued, but both sides should make sacrifices.

There should be a “end” to Russia’s war in Ukraine, according to US National Security Adviser Michael Waltz, who also stated that talks about territorial and security assurances will “underlie” any future negotiations.

Rubio concluded that the EU would be participating since it had “sanctions (against Russia) that have been imposed.” Rubio and Waltz both resisted the idea that European officials would not be included in negotiations. The US allies are being consulted “literally almost on a daily basis, and we’ll continue to do so,” according to Waltz.

A possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump was also briefly mentioned by both parties, though Putin’s advisor Yuri Ushakov added that it would not likely happen next week.
