On his first international journey since being briefly hospitalized due to side effects from cancer treatment, King Charles arrived in Rome Monday for a state visit to Italy.
Charles’s four-day visit, which includes his first speech to the Italian Parliament as a British monarch, is accompanied by Queen Camilla. He will also visit Ravenna to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Adriatic city by Allied forces and meet with the prime minister and president of Italy.
While in Rome, Charles is likely to draw attention to the close ties between Britain and Italy, two NATO members, at a time when European countries are trying to increase support for Ukraine’s struggle against the Russian invasion.
A scheduled meeting with Pope Francis was postponed by mutual consent because of the pope’s recent double pneumonia. The 88-year-old pope unexpectedly appeared unexpectedly in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday after returning to the Vatican two weeks ago.
On March 27, King Charles, 76, was admitted to the hospital for a limited period because of “temporary side effects” from the therapy for an unidentified type of cancer that was discovered more than a year prior. The monarch returned to his planned activities after appearing the next day and waving to well-wishers in central London.
