After the Ceasefire in Ukraine, France and The UK Announce Boots on the Ground

As part of a larger package of security guarantees for Kyiv to prevent a repeat of Russia’s full-scale invasion in the future, France and the United Kingdom have confirmed their determination to station their military on Ukrainian territory following an eventual ceasefire.

Following a meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing” in Paris on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron signed the commitment in a formal proclamation.

I can confirm that after a ceasefire, the UK and France will set up military hubs in Ukraine and create secure facilities to store weapons and military equipment, helping to support Ukraine’s defence,” Starmer said at the end of his speech.

Allies reviewed the guarantees on Tuesday, which would also include a legally enforceable commitment to support Ukraine in the case of another Russian invasion and a sophisticated system to oversee a ceasefire spearheaded by the United States.

The duty, which seems to be based on NATO’s Article 5 of collective defense, may include military assistance as well as diplomatic, logistical, and economic support. Crucially, it would need to be ratified by national legislatures, which would be challenging in nations where support for Ukraine is waning. In the US, it would be approved by the US Congress.
