After the Framework Greenland Deal, Trump Suspends European Tariffs

US President Donald Trump announced late on Wednesday that his administration will suspend planned tariffs on eight European countries, following what he described as constructive talks with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte over Greenland during the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The tariffs, which were due to come into force on 1 February, would have started at 10 percent on imports from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and one additional European country. Rates were set to rise gradually to 25 percent by June. Trump said the decision to pause the measures was based on progress made toward what he called a “framework of a future deal” regarding Greenland.

Writing on Truth Social, Trump said the discussions with Rutte had been productive and claimed the proposed agreement would serve the interests of the United States as well as all NATO members. As a result, he confirmed that the tariffs would not be imposed as scheduled.

Trump added that negotiations would now be handled by a senior US team, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and other officials, all of whom would report directly to him.
