Israel announced on Tuesday that it is cutting ties with three international organisations, including two linked to the United Nations, following the United States’ decision last week to withdraw from dozens of global bodies.
In a statement, the foreign ministry said Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar had ordered an immediate halt to all contact with UN Energy, the UN Alliance of Civilisations, and the Global Forum on Migration and Development, which operates outside the UN system. Sa’ar has also asked the ministry to review Israel’s cooperation with other international organisations, though no details were given.
The ministry said Israel’s engagement with the three bodies was no longer justified. It accused the UN Alliance of Civilizations of excluding Israel from its activities and of being used for years as a platform to criticize the country. UN Energy was described as inefficient and unnecessary, while the Global Forum on Migration and Development was criticized for undermining the right of countries to control their own immigration policies. It was not immediately clear how extensive Israel’s involvement with the three organizations had been before the decision.
