In the aftermath of the recent battle between Israel and Iran, Iranian authorities have executed many people and made a wave of arrests of others accused of having ties to Israeli intelligence systems. Officials say it follows an unparalleled Israeli agent penetration of Iranian security agencies.
According to authorities, a number of high-profile assassinations throughout the conflict may have been influenced by intelligence provided to Israel. These included the deliberate murders of nuclear experts and top leaders of Israel’s Mossad espionage agency operating within the nation, which Iran blames on members of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The magnitude and accuracy of these murders have shocked officials, who have been pursuing anybody they believe is collaborating with foreign intelligence in the name of national security. However, many worry that this is also a means of stifling dissent and strengthening population control.
Three individuals who were suspected of espionage for Israel were put to death by Iranian authorities during the 12-day battle. Just one day after the truce, three more people were put to death on the same accusations on Wednesday. Since then, authorities have reportedly arrested hundreds of individuals nationwide on espionage charges. Multiple inmates have reportedly confessed to working with Israeli intelligence on state television.
